This step brought me to 100 cards exactly, which means this deck is ready to playtest. The default sorting for much of the data on EDHREC is based on inclusion rate in recent decks. EDHREC provides several filters to help users curate desirable results from the data.
How To Build A Commander Deck
It includes several options for identifying and organizing the Card Package. The card package page is nearly identical to a deck page, with the same basic user interface for finding and viewing cards. After creating a card package, it will appear in the “mine” tab on the card package menu. You can add default packages, public packages shared by other users, or create your own. Card packages can be added to a deck on the New Deck screen, or via the “Extras” menu on the deck page. The most direct method is to log into your Archidekt account and click the bright orange button on the main page.
The price of cards is also collected, so it’s possible to see trends and their price on Card Kingdom, TCGPlayer, and Star City Games. “Salt” or “salty” has to do with negative feelings about a particular card. The “salt scores” are the outcome of an annual survey that EDHREC asks its users. The users are shown a specific card and asked to give a “saltiness” rating of 0 to 4. The results are tabulated, and those specific cards are given a salt score. A plus (+) appears in the top left of the image whenever you hover over a card.
Sure, winning isn’t everything, but swinging into the opposing player with an army of 40/40 snake tokens never gets dull. Even if you already know how to play Commander, you might be new and unsure as to how to make your own mark on the format. Here’s what you need to know to build your own Commander deck. Like I already said these aren’t exact numbers, but it should give you some guidance on what your deck needs. The more overlapping cards you end up with the easier it is to find cuts and additions.
That means you can throw in a couple of big old cards into the mix, Commander is where those seven-mana do-nothing enchantment cards that get printed come into their own. If you’re not sure what they are, take a look at Mind’s Dilation. This seven-mana enchantment makes it so whenever an opponent casts their first spell of the turn they have to exile the top card of your deck. Then – and this is where it gets good – you can cast that spell if it’s a nonland card. Even though EDHREC organizes typal and theme pages separately, the layout of these pages is identical.
Curious how others build commander decks.
I’ll refer to these to types of deck building as “top-down” and “bottom-up” deck design respectively. Bolt the Bird is bringing you the latest news, advice, and decklists from the world of MTG. We also host The Bolt Zone podcast with advice for competitive players. When we cast lots of spells, we might as well try going all out. This will be one of our major ways to get ahead and possibly win. Given our aim was mid-power there is no flat-out storm combo here, just some storm pieces that could give us some value.
Deciding to play mid-power, also opens up my card pool a little bit. Some cards that would be too slow or greedy at higher power could fit right in with our target power level. Color identity refers to colored pips that appear anywhere on the card. For example, Tasigur, the Golden Fang has black in his casting cost and an activated ability that requires blue and green. Your Tasguir deck can have cards that contain black, blue, green, and any combination of those three. As I’ve mentioned many times before and will again, building a deck has many nuances depending on your commander and how you want to play the game.
In general, I would try my best to avoid dual lands that can only enter tapped unless you are on the tightest of budgets. Mana in EDH used to be difficult, but in recent years there has been a great number of reprints and new multi-colored lands put into the format. If we’re talking optimal Alpha duals, Fetch lands, and Shock lands, they are all no-brainers.
Check out the cost/production section which will show you how many sources you have for each color, compared to how many times that color comes up in the cost of your included cards. The height should be adjusted according to what kind of deck you are showing, decks without sideboard don’t require much height while Commander decks take up a lot of vertical space. If you do not define enough length, a scrollbar will be automatically added. For those interested, the rest of the top salt list can be a guide of cards to use or fight against.

[c]Pyretic Ritual[/c] is also a form of mana ramp, although it only works when you cast it. Feel free to be creative when planning on how to mtg card cast your powerful spells earlier than your opponents expect. In a format where you can only play one of each card and where there are 99 cards in your library, your chances of drawing the exact card you need are slim.
Our Muldrotha, the Gravetide deck’s core engine cards cost an average of five mana. Our deck wants to cast them as quickly as possible so we can start advancing our game plan. The purpose of ramp is to let you cast your important spells a turn earlier than normal.
Sometimes, I look at a card and think, “wow, this will be great for my Commander deck! Playing a lot of games with the same deck will help you learn which of your cards are overperforming and which ones are underperforming. Then, when it comes to adding a new card to your deck, you’ll have an easy time deciding which cards to replace. Decks that run only one or two colors can have more basic lands in their manabase than decks that run upwards of three colors. Basic lands are super cheap, and you probably have plenty of them already, so replacing those expensive lands with basics will work wonders in helping your budget.
